Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini: Which AI Fits Your Work in 2026?
Features and plans below were checked on each vendor's official pages on 24 October 2026. They change often, so confirm before you subscribe.

"Which AI is best?" is the wrong question. A better one is: what kind of work do I want help with, and where does that work live?
Your files, your inbox, your codebase and your browser are different places. Each of the three big assistants is strongest in a different one.
The quick map
| Your work is mostly... | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Files, folders, reports, spreadsheets you hand off | Claude (Cowork) | Works directly in folders and tools you choose and returns work for review |
| Writing and maintaining code | Claude Code or ChatGPT's Codex | Both vendors include a coding agent in paid plans |
| A bit of everything: chat, images, voice, research | ChatGPT | The widest set of tools in one app |
| Gmail, Docs, Drive and Chrome | Gemini | Built into Google apps and Chrome |
Claude: when the work lives in your files
Anthropic describes Claude Cowork as a way to "give it a goal" so it "works across your files and tools," returning "polished work for your review." It works in folders and tools you choose, shows each step it takes, and can run scheduled tasks.
According to Anthropic's help centre, Cowork tasks run in an isolated cloud environment, so work continues if you close your laptop. Local files and browser use go through the Claude Desktop app. Claude needs your explicit permission before permanently deleting files.
Use Claude when:
- You want to hand off a recurring report, a folder clean-up or a first-pass document review.
- You write software. Claude Code is included from the Pro plan up.
- You want an assistant inside Chrome or Microsoft 365. Both are listed for Pro and above.
Plans (US$, before tax, checked 24 Oct 2026): Free at $0. Pro at $20/month billed monthly, or $17/month billed annually ($200 up front). Max from $100/month, with 5x or 20x more usage than Pro. Cowork requires a paid plan.
A heads-up from the help centre: multi-step Cowork tasks use more of your limits than a quick question.
ChatGPT: the broad generalist
OpenAI's pricing page lists, across its plans, unlimited text chats (subject to abuse guardrails), image creation, voice, deep research, memory, Codex and ChatGPT Work. Paid tiers raise the limits.
The Plus plan adds projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs, plus "expanded access to ChatGPT Work on desktop, web, and mobile." Pro adds longer Codex and ChatGPT Work sessions.
Use ChatGPT when:
- Your days mix many small jobs: drafting, brainstorming, images, voice, quick research.
- You want one app for both everyday questions and longer hand-off tasks.
- You build websites and want Codex alongside chat.
Plans: Free, Go, Plus and Pro for individuals, plus Business and Enterprise. I could not read reliable prices on the official page today, because they load dynamically and vary by country. Check chatgpt.com/pricing for your region.
Gemini: when your day runs on Google
Google's subscription page puts Gemini "directly in Google apps": Gmail and Vids on AI Plus, and Gmail, Docs, Vids and more on AI Pro. AI Pro also includes Gemini in Chrome with "Chrome auto browse to help complete tasks for you," Deep Research and Gemini Notebook, a research and writing assistant.
Use Gemini when:
- Your documents, mail and storage are already in Google Workspace.
- You do a lot of web research and want the help inside Chrome.
- Extra cloud storage matters to you. AI Pro bundles 5 TB.
Plans (US prices, checked 24 Oct 2026): Free at $0, Google AI Plus at $4.99/month, Google AI Pro at $19.99/month, and Google AI Ultra from $99.99/month ($199.99 for 20x the AI Pro limits). Prices differ by country. In Croatia, for example, the same page shows AI Pro at €22.99/month.
How to choose in one afternoon
- Pick one real task you do every week: a report, an inbox triage, a client proposal.
- Run it on the free tier of the two tools that fit where your work lives.
- Compare the output, not the demo. How much did you have to fix?
- Check the limits on the plan you would actually pay for.
- Keep the human step. None of these tools replaces your review, especially before anything is sent or deleted.
Many people end up using two: one for files or code, and one for everyday chat.
